Skype is a great tool when it comes to voice and video calling. It offers support for major platforms including mobile devices and desktop computers. But sometimes, downloading and installing Skype can be a problem for you. For example you might want to use Skype on a computer that is not yours or you are in a hurry and you don’t have time for the download and installation process. To save you from this trouble, Skype has a new version which is called Skype for Web. It works on your web browser and you don’t need to install anything.
How to use Skype for web
The point about this version of Skype is that it is absolutely straightforward to use it. All you need to do is to open your web browser and type on skype.web.com in the address bar. Skype login page will load for you in the form of a web page and you will need to enter your Skype username and password to login to your account.
As for the platforms, Windows and Mac OS are supported. Linux and other operating systems such as Android and iOS are not supported yet. This means that you cannot use Skype on your mobile phone’s browser. This could have been very helpful considering the amount of space that Skype occupies on mobile devices.
And for the browsers, Internet Explorer version 9 or later for Windows, Safari for Mac OS, and universally Chrome and Firefox are supported on Skype for web.
Skype for web plugin
In this version of Skype, users can send messages and share multimedia files. But it is not possible to make a VoIP call through the web version. If you want to use Skype web to make voice or video call, you will need to install a plugin for your web browser. When you login to your Skype account via your web browser, you will be initiated to install this plugin when you try to make your first call. Downloading and installing this plugin should not take more than a few minutes and you only need to do it once.
The Skype web plugin is actually installed as a standalone program. This means that this plugin does not cling to your browser and once you install it, you can use it with any web browser.
Features of Skype for web
Skype is an application known for rich features. But the web version of this application still has room for improvements and and does not offer all the features that are available on its application.
As mentioned before, you can use the web version of Skype to send messages individually or in groups. You can also share photos or other types of multimedia files. By installing the plugin, you can make voice calls with up to 25 or video calls with up to 10 participants.
You can also make calls to numbers outside Skype. There is a dial pad you can use to dial numbers. The call quality is acceptable and it might not be as good as the application.
The interface on Skype for Web is similar to the application with the same functionalities. But some details might be missing on the web version.
Should I use Skype for web?
Skype web is a fascinating tool and is definitely worth trying. It runs very well on slow internet connections where it is not possible to download and install the application. But the only point about it is that you need to install the plugin. If you need to install a plugin to use Skype web to make calls, then why not install the app itself? Also when you are trying to login to your Skype account, you need to watch out for fake login pages and phishing attacks. These pages might hack Skype account and steal your password.
