Internet can be a fabulous resource for kids. On the other hand, it can be addictive and too time consuming. Nowadays, children have access to internet on their mobile devices, tablets, or laptops. But the only problem is not the large amount of time that they spend surfing the net. It is actually what they do and the type of content they view. Sometimes websites are too adult oriented. They contain a specific type of language, images, or videos that you wouldn’t want your child to view. Of course, as a wise parent you well know that you have to do something about it. But is it possible to limit their access to or block inappropriate websites and content? Well, actually you can do that. And good news is that it is quite simple and doesn’t require much knowledge of computers.
Block inappropriate websites through router
If you have WiFi at home, your kids probably have access to it. They can of course use internet connection for useful purposes but the adult content is always there. Surfing the net, your child may end up in an inappropriate website and you well know how curious children are. One way to protect your children from viewing adult content and to block inappropriate websites is through your internet router.
Most of the routers come with settings which allow you to block specific websites. You can define specific Mac addresses and time schedule for blocking. You can check your router guide lines to find out how to do that.
Restrict browsing on your child browser
Depending on the internet browser that your child uses, you can make some configurations and block specific websites and content for your kids. For example if your child uses Internet Explorer, here is how you can do that:
- Click on Tools
- Go to Internet Options
- Choose Content tab and enable Content Advisor
From the Content Advisor you can set your desirable settings.
- You can set rating levels for sex, nudity, violence, etc.
- You can set Approved and Unapproved Sites
- Create password for some specific websites
Use parental control applications
Parental control applications allow you to monitor your children’s online activity without them knowing. But what can such applications do about inappropriate websites?
Parental control apps provide parents with the ability to block specific URLs on your children’s devices. Also, a good parental control app provides the parents with the ability to access and view the visited websites on the target device. So, using a monitoring software, you can know what type of websites your kid tends to visit most often and block the ones inappropriate for their age.
